The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two key suspects linked to the gruesome murder of a young woman from Nasarawa State, whose body was set ablaze in the Gangare slum behind the Mile 12 Market, Lagos.

According to the spokesperson of Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Sunday, the incident occurred on Saturday .

He explained that the young lady was attacked, killed, and her body burned in what investigators have described as a premeditated act of conspiracy and cold-blooded murder.

Contrary to misinformation circulating on social media, Hundeyin clarified that the victim was not of Yoruba origin, and there was no element of blasphemy involved in the crime.

He stated that investigations revealed that the attack stemmed from a long-standing conflict between the victim and her estranged boyfriend, who is now on the run.

The boyfriend is alleged to have conspired with others, including the two suspects currently in custody, to carry out the heinous act.

“Contrary to speculations circulating and other misinformation about the cause of the murder of the deceased, it was found out that the deceased was residing in the slum with her northern relatives, and her exact profession remains unidentified at this time. Facts from preliminary investigation clearly revealed that she is from Nasarawa State and not a Yoruba Woman.

“The protracted problem between her and her boyfriend now at large, who wanted at all cost to compelled her back into the love relationship after break up resulted in the boyfriend conspiring with other suspects, two of whom are in police custody to round her up, attack her, kill her in cold blood and set her body ablaze.

“The killing of the young lady in cold blood is clearly a premeditated crime of conspiracy and cold blooded murder, which should be condemned by all. There was no element of blasphemy by the victim before her gruesome murder,” Hundeyin said.

The arrested suspects are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, where they are assisting police in tracking down the ex-boyfriend and other accomplices.

Hundeyin reassured residents that peace has been restored in the area and that there is no threat of ethnic or communal violence in Mile 12 or any part of Lagos.

“There was no tension or threat of reprisal attack between any ethnic group against the other in Ketu Mile 12 or any other part of Lagos State. Lagosians are encouraged not to panic.

“They are urged to go about their lawful activities peacefully without apprehension. While awaiting the outcome of the investigation which will certainly be made public, people are implored to exercise restraint and refrain from spreading unverified information that may cause unnecessary fear.

“The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and will continue to provide timely updates as the investigation progresses,” he added.
