The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 52 suspected cultists in a series of coordinated raids ahead of July 7, a date infamously associated with cult-related violence in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspects were apprehended in the Mushin area while allegedly preparing to launch attacks in commemoration of the so-called 7:7 Cultism Day.

The arrests followed credible intelligence indicating that rival cult groups were planning to unleash mayhem on the day.

Hundeyin confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be prosecuted after investigations are concluded.

“Following credible intelligence indicating that certain cult groups may attempt to cause mayhem and engage in reprisal attacks on July 7, the Command has put robust measures in place to forestall any such activities.

“The Command is fully prepared to maintain law and order and would ensure that no individual or group disrupts the peace of our dear state,” Hundeyin said.

“Acting on this intelligence, the Command today carried out a proactive and advanced raids of cultists’ criminal hideouts around the Mushin area of the state; fifty-two (52) suspected culprits were arrested while in preparation for tomorrow’s violent attacks in the State.

“The suspects are currently detained in police custody and they will be charged to Court at the end of the investigation.”

Hundeyin revealed that special units, including the Anti-Cultism Squad, Police Mobile Force, State Intelligence Department, and other tactical teams, have been deployed across Lagos to maintain law and order.

As part of preventive measures, he said the state Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, held an emergency meeting with commanders of tactical units, charging them to ensure that no cultist is allowed to disrupt the peace of the state.

According to the statement, Jimoh also warned hotel operators, managers of recreational centres, and residents against allowing their premises to be used for cult-related gatherings.

He stressed that any establishment found aiding such activities would face legal consequences.

He further urged parents and guardians to counsel their children and wards to stay away from cultism and violence, adding that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted.
