Ogun: NDLEA arrests 395 suspects, secures 97 convictions in 6 months

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Ogun State Command says it arrested no fewer than 395 suspects and secured 97 convictions from January to June, 2025.

The suspects comprises of 331 males and 64 female.

The State Commander, Tijjani Rabe, disclosed this on Monday while speaking at the 2025 World International Youth Day Celebration organized by the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State Council.

The year’s celebration themed, ‘Youth Empowerment for a Sustainable Future’, was held at the NUJ Secretariat, Iwe Iroyin, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.

The commander of narcotics and chairman of the occasion, Rabe disclosed that along with the arrests, eight tonnes of cannabis sativa and various quantities of other psychotropic drugs were seized while 186 clients were counseled.

He lamented the devastating effects of drug abuse on youths and communities in the state, stressing that it is also a grave threat to the country’s human capital and future development.

Rabe revealed that in 2024, the Command seized 12 tonnes of Cannabis sativa, arrested 687 suspects, counselled 406 drug users and secured 221 convictions.

He said, “In 2025, from January to June, the Command arrested 395 suspects,
comprising of 331 male suspects and 64 female suspects, while 186 clients were counselled.

“We have also secured 97 convictions and seized 8 tonnes of Cannabis Sativa and various quantities of other psychotropic drugs.

“As drug law enforcement practitioners we have understood over time, that the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking is a collective responsibility.

“In the year 2024, the State Command seized 12 tonnes of Cannabis sativa, arrested 687 suspects made up of 572 male suspects and 115 female suspects respectively. We counselled 406 drug users, comprising of 394 male clients and 12 female clients. In our prosecution effort, we secured 221 convictions.”

Rabe noted that as practitioners of drug law enforcement, the agency’s operatives recognised that combating drug abuse and illegal trafficking is a shared duty. He therefore urged parents, religious institutions, traditional leaders and all relevant stakeholders to join hands and speak with one voice against drug abuse and trafficking.

The NDLEA boss also called for the empowerment of youths with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to resist the temptation of substance abuse.
