Plateau attacks: Miyetti Allah slams religious leaders over ‘irresponsible rhetoric’

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned the alleged role of some religious leaders in a recent deadly attack in Plateau State.

The attack occurred on Sunday when suspected bandits stormed Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, killing about 28 people and injuring several others. The assailants reportedly opened fire and used machetes on victims at a popular bar in the area.

In a statement on Tuesday, MACBAN President Baba Othman-Ngelzarma described the killings as tragic and expressed concern over what he called the recurring cycle of violence in the state.

He accused some religious leaders and influencers of fuelling tensions through “reckless and inflammatory rhetoric”, warning that such actions were worsening insecurity and undermining peaceful coexistence.

His words, “MACBAN views with grave concern the recurring cycle of violence in Plateau, which continues to undermine peaceful coexistence and threaten national unity.

“We are particularly disturbed by the alleged role played by some religious leaders and influencers. Instead of promoting peace and tolerance, they have chosen to fan the embers of division through reckless and inflammatory rhetoric.

“Such actions are irresponsible, dangerous, and contribute directly to the escalation of violence and intolerance in our communities.”

Othman-Ngelzarma called on religious, traditional, and community leaders to promote dialogue and restraint, stressing that words could either heal or destroy fragile communities.

He also urged security agencies to act decisively, investigate those inciting violence, and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted without bias.

“Those responsible for instigating violence, whether through direct action or inciting statements, must be identified, investigated, and brought to justice without fear or favour. Impunity only emboldens further violence,” he added.

According to him, strengthening intelligence gathering and increasing security presence in vulnerable communities are critical to preventing further attacks.

“We stand ready to collaborate with all stakeholders, government, civil society, religious institutions, and community leaders to restore lasting peace in Plateau and across Nigeria.

“The time for decisive action is now. Enough of the bloodshed.”
