Piastri Pips Verstappen, Hadjar To Win Dutch Grand Prix
Oscar Piastri recorded a stunning victory to beat Max Verstappen at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday, while Lando Norris retired late in the clash.
Norris was on course to finish second in the race, but he suffered an oil leak with eight laps remaining, which forced him to retire.
He is now 34 points behind Piastri with nine rounds to go.
It was a dominant performance from Piastri, who led from start to finish to go 34 points clear in the drivers’ championship.
Verstappen finished behind Piastri, taking advantage of Norris’ retirement to seal the position.
Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar recorded a surprise podium place with a third-place finish to become the youngest Frenchman to stand on the podium and the first for the Racing Bulls outfit since Pierre Gasly in 2021.
It was a disastrous day for Ferrari as Lewis Hamilton crashed out by himself early on when light rain began to fall, suffering his first retirement as a Ferrari driver.
Piastri was delighted to win the race while expressing sympathy for Lando Norris.
He said, “It feels good, obviously. I controlled the race when I needed to, and obviously, it was incredibly unfortunate for Lando at the end.
“But I felt like I was in control of that one and just used the pace when I needed to. That was a bit of a different race from 12 months ago, so I’m very happy with all the work we’ve done to try to improve around here and very satisfied to come out on top.”
