Petroleum Engineers Urges FG to Ramp Up Oil Production to 2.7mbpd by 2030
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has urged Nigeria to implement forward-looking strategies to scale crude oil production to 2.7 million barrels per day (mbpd) by the year 2030.
Dr. Amina Danmiani, SPE Nigeria Council Chairperson, made the remarks during a press briefing in Lagos ahead of the 2025 edition of its flagship International Conference and Exhibition (SPENAICE), scheduled for August 4–6.
She noted that Nigeria currently produces around 1.75 mbpd, including condensates, and must prioritise enhanced recovery techniques, infrastructure resilience, and gas monetisation to meet future targets.
She also highlighted the country’s 209 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves as a critical resource for supporting both energy security and economic diversification.
“Over the past year, Nigeria has witnessed historic divestments by international oil companies from onshore and shallow-water assets. SPENAICE 2025 will be a turning point for Nigeria’s energy future,” she said.
The upcoming conference, expected to host over 4,000 participants and 80 exhibitors, will address key sector challenges under the theme: “Building a Sustainable Energy Future: Leveraging Technology, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and Policy.”
“This year’s theme… is a call to action,” Danmiani noted, adding that it reflects the urgency of combining local capacity, tech innovation, and sound policies to secure Nigeria’s energy and economic goals.
She emphasised SPE’s commitment to mentoring young professionals, fostering knowledge-sharing, and ensuring greater indigenous participation during the ongoing industry transition.
“SPENAICE 2025 is where Nigeria’s energy past meets its future,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, NNPC Limited has announced plans to raise oil output to 2 million bpd by 2027. The Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, revealed during the OPEC Seminar in Vienna that Nigeria’s current output stands at 1.63 million bpd.
He also said the company aims to increase daily gas production from 7 billion to 10 billion cubic feet by 2027.
