Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has flagged off the reconstruction of the 13-kilometre Onuinyang-Okporoenyi-Oboro-Ikwuno road.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, held at Central School Okporoenyi in Bende LGA, Governor Otti emphasised the road’s economic importance, noting that it serves as a crucial link between the central and northern parts of Abia, connecting thousands of farmers to urban markets.

According to him, roads are essential for economic prosperity, and his administration is determined to complete the project on schedule with high-quality standards.

The governor highlighted the agricultural significance of the benefiting communities, which are renowned for producing cocoa, cassava, cereals, and vegetables. He stated that the reconstruction would facilitate the smooth transportation of farm produce, enhance inter-community trade, and promote social interactions.

Describing the intervention as part of his administration’s broader agenda to uplift every community, Governor Otti reaffirmed his commitment to equitable development across the state.

“We made a commitment at the inception of this administration that not a single community in Abia shall be neglected in our determined push to revive the rivers of our economy and create an environment that supports the dreams and aspirations of our hard-working population,” he stated.

Hon. Emmanuel Ndubuisi, the member representing Bende South State Constituency, and Mr Chijioke Nwankwo, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Deputy Governor, lauded the initiative, calling it a clear demonstration of Governor Otti’s dedication to good governance.

The Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, provided further details on the project, explaining that the road is divided into two sections, each assigned to a different construction company. The contract duration is set at six months, and the road will feature asphaltic concrete, drainage systems, culverts, and lighting installations.

Mayors of Ikwuano and Bende LGAs, Dr Anthony Nwaubani and Deacon Uwabunkeonye Bassey, respectively, praised Governor Otti for prioritising infrastructure as a means of empowering rural communities. They described the road project as a significant boost to Abia’s agricultural sector.

Traditional rulers and community leaders, including Eze Engr. Ossy Iromantu of the Okporoenyi autonomous community, Eze Innocent Ezeala of Ibe Uzo Amawom-Oboro, and Chief Sunny Chigbu of Nkalunta recalled that the road was last constructed in 1952 under the leadership of Dr Michael Okpara.

They expressed gratitude to Governor Otti, stating that the project would enhance agricultural productivity and economic opportunities for the people.
