Opeyori Targets Second Title At African Senior Badminton Championship
Nigeria’s badminton star, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, is eyeing his consecutive title at the 2025 All-African Senior Badminton Championship in Douala, Cameroon.
The tournament is set to take place from February 10th to 16th, 2025.
Opeyori won the singles edition of the event last year, and he is now targeting another title in Cameroon.
He said, “I always keep an open mind to everything. Hopefully, I’ll be able to win the singles event at the All-African Senior Badminton Championship again.
“The year is just beginning, and being in camp for the championship is a great start for us.
In the last few years, Opeyori has made Nigeria proud in Africa and the world at large.
He has dominated Africa in the men’s singles from 2019 till date, winning four African Championship titles and two African Games titles.
He also became the first Nigerian badminton player to qualify for two consecutive Olympics after featuring at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
Another Nigerian badminton star, Victor Ikechukwu, has also expressed his readiness for the tournament in Cameroon.
He said, “By the grace of God, I believe I will do better at this year’s championship. With the continued support of my coaches and teammates, I will give my best effort and trust that God will crown my hard work with success.
“Winning the bronze medal at the previous edition was challenging, but it only made me more determined to improve.”.
At the last edition of the tournament in Cairo, Nigeria won one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals.
In the Women’s Doubles, Nigeria’s Dorcas Ajoke Adesokan paired with Sofiyat Obanishola to lose out narrowly to Uganda’s Husina Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi 21-18, 19-21, 18-21 after fighting gallantly in the semifinals to get a spot on the podium for the bronze medal.
Nigeria’s male team in the team event narrowly lost to Algeria in the finals to settle for silver.
