One Killed, Several Injured As Truck Crashes Into Isheri Market

Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning when a trailer lost control and crashed into the bustling Isheri Market near the OPIC bus stop along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, killing one person, injuring several others, and destroying properties.

Eyewitnesses say the truck, which was approaching from Lagos, suffered a brake failure as it neared the OPIC area.

A commercial motorcyclist who witnessed the incident recounted the terrifying moment.

“While I was at the OPIC bus stop roundabout, a container coming from Lagos reached the OPIC bus stop. When he was coming, there was no traffic on the express, he didn’t have brakes when he tried to enter the estate, he then crashed into the market and killed a person,” the witness told Channels TV.

In a desperate bid to avoid hitting the estate gate, the driver swerved right — a move that led the vehicle straight into the market, toppling stalls and injuring unsuspecting vendors and shoppers.

The only confirmed fatality was a local tea vendor, who was attending to his regular customers when the accident occurred.

Authorities have yet to confirm the total number of injured persons. Meanwhile, the driver has been arrested and is currently being held at the Isheri Tactical Unit as investigations are underway.

Attempts by our correspondent to reach the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls.
