Ondo Guber: APC Rejects Calls For Removal Of INEC REC

The Ondo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected calls for the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo state, Mrs. Toyin Babalola.

The party condemned the action of protesters who on Tuesday stormed the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja demanding the removal of REC.

The protesters under the aegis of Ondo Youth League Action for Credible and Transparent Election demonstrated at the INEC headquarters. They demanded the redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo state, Mrs. Toyin Babalola, ahead of the November 16 governorship election.

Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, the APC Director of Media & Publicity, Steve Otaloro, said the protesters were members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Otaloro described the protest as a shameful attempt to undermine the integrity of the upcoming governorship election in the state.

He noted that the PDP’s call for removing Babalola as the state REC was a solo effort that reeked of desperation and bitterness.

“It’s alarming that a political party would resort to such tactics, attempting to dictate who conducts an election, which is contrary to the constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act 2022.

“The APC wishes to remind the PDP that the electoral process is governed by laws and guidelines, not by the whims of any political party. We urge INEC to remain steadfast in its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections,” he said.

Otaloro urged INEC to remain impartial and not bow to the pressure of the opposition party, warning that submitting to the PDP’s demands would be unfair to other participating parties and undermine the electoral process.

He said: It’s crucial to recognize that all parties have submitted to the electoral process and applauded INEC’s organisational efforts, except for the PDP, which continues to harass and dictate to INEC.

“The APC believes the PDP is building excuses for their impending loss. We caution INEC against making decisions that could compromise the election’s integrity.

“Mrs Babalola has served the commission diligently, and removing her based on fabricated allegations would be unjust.

“We also urge the general public to be vigilant and not allow desperate politicians to undermine the democratic process.

“The APC is confident in Governor Aiyedatiwa’s popularity and commitment to the welfare of Ondo State citizens.

“In conclusion, we reiterate our commitment to supporting INEC in conducting a peaceful and credible election.

“We will not be swayed by the PDP’s antics and will continue to focus on delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Ondo State.”
