Okada Ban: Lagos Task Force Impounds 139 Motorcycles, Warns Riders

The Lagos State Taskforce has intensified its enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, impounding 139 motorcycles in a recent crackdown targeting restricted routes across the state.

The operation, which focused on areas including Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Abule-Ado, Agric Bus Stop, and Ojo Barracks, was part of ongoing efforts to curtail illegal Okada activities that pose risks to public safety.

Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, confirmed the seizures, warning that violators would face strict legal consequences. According to him, the state government’s ban on Okada operations in designated areas remains in force and will be rigorously enforced.

“The ban on Okada operations in certain areas was put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all Lagosians, and we will not tolerate any breach of this law. Those who continue to operate in restricted areas, endangering the lives of road users, will face the full weight of the law,” a statement on Wednesday by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, quoted Akerele as saying.

Akerele expressed concern that, despite repeated public sensitisation, some riders have remained defiant, continuing to ply routes where motorcycle operations are prohibited. He said the impounded motorcycles have been confiscated, and legal proceedings will be initiated against the offenders.

The Chairman reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance and urged the public to avoid using Okadas in banned areas for their safety. He also encouraged residents to support the task force by reporting violators.

Highlighting the state government’s commitment to safety under the THEMES Plus Agenda, Akerele assured that enforcement activities will be sustained across the state, particularly in areas prone to illegal Okada operations.

The Lagos State Government first instituted the Okada ban to reduce road accidents, curb insecurity, and ensure orderly traffic flow within the metropolis.
