Super Falcons interim coach Justine Madugu has reserved special praises for the Nigeria Women’s Football League players following their impressive performance in the double-header, friendly matches against Algeria.

The Super Falcons defeated the North Africans 4-1 at the Onikan Stadium on Tuesday with Edo Queens striker, Folashade Ijamilusi scoring a sensational hat-trick before Monday Gift added the other goal.

Ijamilusi opened the scoring for Nigeria after 12 minutes, scoring from a corner-kick, and doubled the lead nine minutes later after latching onto a second ball following Blessing Ilivieda’s effort that hit the crossbar.

Algeria missed the opportunity to reduce the deficit when Lina Boussaha failed to convert her effort from the penalty spot.

However, Ouassila Alouache finally got on the score sheet for Algeria just before halftime after an impressive run to slot past Unachukwu for their only goal of the encounter.

Gift Monday netted the third with a powerful header in added time of the first period.

An entertaining second half produced only one goal, with Ijamilusi completing her hat-trick with minutes left in the second half.

The Super Falcons won the first encounter between both teams in Ikenne on Saturday with captain Rasheedat Ajibade scoring a brace.

The team is made up of mainly home-based players with only six foreign based players called up for the friendlies.

Madugu expressed delight in the NWFL players’ performances after they played a pivotal role in the victories.

He said, “We’ve seen a lot of potentials. Some of them have really shown what they can bring to the table.

“I commend the girls for their performance even though we only had very few training sessions together. It gives us hope and belief that going forward, we will have more formidable Super Falcons.

“These games were important because if you don’t give them a chance, there’s no way to know if they can meet expectations.

“Frequent meetings and friendly games help us build chemistry. Short camps allow us to test players’ abilities, and we’ll invite foreign-based players when we have longer windows.

“We’re constantly evaluating. More than half of these players could still make an impact, even against tougher opponents,”

The Super Falcons are preparing for the 2025 WAFCON in July.
