The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has condemned the armed attacks on a private radio station, Rhythm 94.7 FM, in Yenagoa, the state capital.

In a statement jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, and the Secretary, Comrade Stanley Imgbi, the union described the incident as a “rape on the entire media family in Bayelsa and press freedom”.

According to the statement, the station was attacked on two consecutive days —Saturday, May 17, at about 2:10 p.m. and Sunday, May 18, at approximately 4:40 p.m. — by unidentified gunmen who carted away valuables including mobile phones, recorders, and operational gadgets belonging to staff on duty.

“The state council was informed that the gunmen on two separate days attacked the station and carted away valuables,” said Yemoleigha.

He called on the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police and the broader security architecture to swing into action and ensure the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

Yemoleigha also urged security agencies to deploy a patrol van to the area as a preventive measure, similar to those stationed at other strategic points across Yenagoa.

The NUJ Bayelsa Chairman expressed gratitude that no lives were lost during the attacks.
