Determined to intensify the fight against illegal mining, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) mining marshals have55 vowed to dismantle illicit operations and the conspiracy networks behind them.

Speaking at the NSCDC National Headquarters on Tuesday, the Mining Marshals Commander, John Attah, highlighted the squad’s major achievements in 2024, including breaking through powerful cartels and overcoming challenges to protect Nigeria’s mineral resources.

Attah noted that, following the establishment of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the protection of the nation’s natural resources—including mines, forestry, and coastal shores—the Mining Marshals have developed strategies to curb illegal activities in the sector.

He commended the strong collaboration between the Ministry of Solid Minerals and the NSCDC, which led to the launch of the Specialized Mining Marshals by Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, on March 21, 2024.

He stated that since then, over 2,509 specially trained operatives have been deployed across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT to intensify security in mining areas.

The Combatant Mining Marshal Squad Leader praised NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for fostering a professional environment that has enabled officers to execute their duties with patriotism and efficiency.

He revealed that the squad has conducted multiple operations, which includes shutting down illegal mining sites, arresting offenders, and ensuring compliance with legal mining frameworks.

“We are very optimistic that with the encouragement and strategies put in place by the CG, our vigour is further renewed. The squad is poised to smoke out illegal miners and their cartels without compromise,” Attah declared.

The Mining Marshals however vowed to intensify their crackdown in 2025, and reinforce their mission to safeguard Nigeria’s vast mineral wealth from economic saboteurs.
