The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has intensified its fight against gender-based violence (GBV) through a two-day workshop themed “Gender: Transformative Approach.”

The training, which ended on Wednesday, equipped area commanders, divisional officers, and other personnel with skills to tackle GBV.

The FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, represented by DCC Pama Hussaini, said there was an urgent need to educate officers on gender-sensitive approaches to things.

This, he said, was critical in light of the alarming frequency of GBV cases reported across the FCT.

“The purpose of the workshop was to enhance the effectiveness of our personnel as gender-based violence has become a critical issue affecting communities where we live and operate,” Dr. Odumosu stated.

He stated the key role officers play in preventing and addressing GBV, urging them to be mindful of their actions and decisions, as these could directly or indirectly impact the safety and dignity of survivors.

The workshop featured expert resource persons from reputable agencies, including the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat.

Participants were drawn from various Area Commands, divisions, and specialised units, including the Safe Schools and Female Squad.

Dr Odumosu expressed confidence that the training had equipped officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to foster gender-transforming practices in their workplaces and communities.

“I challenge you all to return to your respective Area Commands and Divisions as change agents, educating both officers and complainants about the dangers of gender-based violence and the need for a violence-free society,” he charged.

He also lauded the resource persons for their dedication and contributions to the success of the workshop.

The Commandant further called on the public to support government efforts in eradicating GBV by speaking out and reporting cases promptly to prevent severe consequences.

“The fight against gender-based violence requires collective responsibility. Say ‘No’ to violence and report any known cases before it results in harm or loss of life,” he urged.
