Nigeria, Liberia Parliaments Partner On Climate Change

The Nigerian Parliament and its Liberian counterpart are seeking collaboration on ways to tackle the effects of climate change on the two countries.

The devastation occasioned by climate change is being felt globally, posing threats to the survival of the human ecosystem.

A delegation of Liberian larliamentarian and environmentalists who met with members of the Nigeria n Senate on Thursday, stressed the need for collaboration between the two countries.

The Liberian delegation, led by Mr Ernest Manseah Snr, had separate interactive sessions with the Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the two chambers of the National Assembly.

Manseah, in his remarks during the session with the Senate’s Ecology and Climate Change committee, observed that Nigeria is far ahead of other African countries in mitigation efforts against climate change hence the decision to visit the country.

Manseah said, “We have come to learn from you, distinguished members of this committee on how Nigeria as a country, has been mitigating the effects of climate change.

“We are here to engage with you on that and take home very remarkable measures being taken here to confront the environmental challenges caused by climate change.

“In Liberia, we are thinking of Climate Fund, but beyond the Fund, we want to tap into Nigeria’s ways of tackling the natural challenges.”

The chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Seriake Dickson, described climate change as a major challenge.

According to him, the issue required all African countries to put up their thinking caps and rise to the challenge.

“Here in Nigeria, for effective way of confronting challenges of climate change, we have an Act or better put, a law with relevant provisions for measures and actions that will mitigate its effects.

“The Act or law, is the first in Africa which makes Nigeria one of the leading countries in the world addressing the issues of climate change. Nonetheless, we still need collaboration with other countries for more effective ways of confronting challenges of climate change.

“We appreciate your visit and also wish to visit Liberia for consolidation of the collaboration,” Dickson said.
