Nigeria Immigration Warns Students, Travellers Against U.S Visa Misuse

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued an advisory to Nigerian citizens, urging them to use their United States visas responsibly in accordance with the purpose stated during their visa application process.

The advisory, which was shared late Friday via the NIS’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, follows concerns raised by the U.S. Government over the misuse of visas by some Nigerian nationals.

In a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the Nigerian immigration warned that violating U.S. visa rules could result in visa revocation, deportation, and even permanent ineligibility for future travel.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians.

*All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications. U.S. authorities conduct security screening beyond the initial point of entry into the country. Any breach of immigration or other laws can lead to visa revocation or deportation,” the statement read.

Akinlabi further cautioned that overstaying or violating visa conditions could attract severe consequences, including removal from the United States and permanent disqualification from future visa applications.

The NIS also issued a specific advisory to Nigerian students currently studying in the U.S. to remaining in active academic programmes.

The agency warned that unauthorised withdrawal from school or prolonged absenteeism could lead to the cancellation of student visas and jeopardise future travel prospects.

It added that increasing scrutiny is being applied by U.S. consular officers, particularly in cases where applicants are suspected of intending to travel for childbirth in order to secure U.S. citizenship for their children. Such suspicions could result in visa denials.

“The NIS will continue to collaborate with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions.

“We are calling on all Nigerian citizens to comply with U.S. visa rules, as such conduct is essential to safeguarding legitimate travel opportunities,” Akinlabi added.
