The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated ₦1.75 trillion in revenue during the first quarter of 2025.
This announcement was made on Tuesday in Abuja by the Comptroller-General of the Service, Adewale Adeniyi, during a media briefing that highlighted the agency’s performance over the period.
According to Adeniyi, the revenue collected surpassed the Service’s initial quarterly target of ₦1.65 trillion.
“I am proud to announce that we have exceeded this year’s target by ₦106.5 billion, achieving 106.47 percent of our quarterly projection.
This outstanding performance represents a substantial 29.96 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, when we collected ₦1.35 trillion. Our month-by-month analysis reveals even more encouraging details of this growth trajectory.
January’s collection of ₦647.88 billion not only surpassed its monthly target of ₦548.33 billion by 18.12 percent, but also showed a remarkable 65.77 percent year-on-year growth. February’s ₦540.11 billion exceeded its target by 1.3 percent while achieving 19.97 percent growth over 2024 figures.”
Adeniyi noted that the positive momentum continued into March 2025, with revenue collection reaching ₦563.52 billion. This figure reflects a 2.7 percent increase above the set target and an 11.22 percent growth compared to March 2024.
He also revealed that the Service carried out 298 seizures within the quarter, with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦7.7 billion. This marks a 78.41 percent surge from the ₦4.32 billion recorded in the last quarter of 2024, indicating a significant improvement in enforcement outcomes.
Adeniyi described this performance as evidence of enhanced operational efficiency. However, he noted that the DPV saw a 19.70 percent decrease compared to the ₦9.59 billion reported in the first quarter of 2024.
He attributed this decline to growing compliance levels among importers and stakeholders, fostered by ongoing engagements and the deterrent impact of strengthened enforcement measures.
“Rice remained the most prevalent seized commodity, with 159 cases involving 135,474 bags valued at ₦939.31 million.
Petroleum products followed with 61 seizures totaling 65,819 litres (₦43.34 million DPV). Of particular note were 22 narcotics interceptions valued at ₦730.75 million, reflecting our intensified focus on combating drug trafficking.
The Service also recorded three high-value wildlife product seizures with a remarkable ₦5.65 billion DPV,” he said.
Adeniyi stated that this underscored both the lucrative nature of the illegal trade and the NCS’s commitment to environmental protection under the extant international conventions.
The Customs boss also detailed some of the significant seizures made during the quarter, which included 13 instances of textile materials with a Duty Paid Value of ₦134.22 million, as well as five cases involving retreaded tires worth ₦104.60 million.
Additionally, a single case of intercepted pharmaceuticals was reported, valued at ₦17.19 million in DPV. He emphasized that these seizures underscore the Service’s unwavering commitment to monitoring and intercepting all forms of prohibited and restricted goods.
Adeniyi further noted that, within the same period, the Nigeria Customs Service processed 327,928 Single Goods Declarations for imports. The goods handled had a combined weight of 4.91 billion kilogrammes and a total Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) value amounting to ₦14.81 trillion.
