The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Niger State Chapter, has lent its strong support to the growing calls for the establishment of specialized courts dedicated to prosecuting cases of Gender-Based Violence, GBV.

The State Chairman of NUJ, Abu Nmodu stated this during a courtesy visit by officials of a Non-Governmental Organization, Global Promoters for Community Initiative at IBB Pen House Minna.

He explained that when established, the Special Courts would help in decongesting conventional courts thereby, giving room for speedy dispensation of justice for GBV victims in the state.

Nmodu also described GBV as a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabric of society and calls for concerted efforts by stakeholders to eradicate it.

While noting that attributed gender-based violence to socioeconomic and psychological factors, he commended the promoters of the initiative.

“The initiative will assist in reshaping the society and change the mindset of the people towards positive thinking. We assured you of the NUJ’s support as your visit will further strengthen the collaboration between us, ” he observed.

The Head of Monitoring and Evaluation of the initiative Hajara Achibi earlier stated that the visit was to solicit the support of journalists in the collective efforts to eradicate GBV cases through advocacy and enlightenment.

“We are agitating for the creation of special courts to fast-track prosecution of offenders and we are calling on journalists to assist in publicizing our activities in the state, ” Achibi added.
