NEFGAD Applauds President Tinubu’s Procurement Reform

The Network for the Actualisation of Social Growth and Viable Development (NEFGAD), a prominent public procurement advocacy group in Nigeria, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a sweeping reform of public procurement thresholds for Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The move is being celebrated as a landmark step toward transparency, efficiency, and decentralisation in governance.

In a statement released on Friday by NEFGAD’s Country Head of Office, Mr Akingunola Omoniyi, in Abuja, the group praised the restructuring of contract approval thresholds across the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Ministerial and Parastatal Tenders Boards, and Accounting Officers.

The reform is expected to streamline procurement processes, accelerate decision-making, and eliminate bureaucratic delays, allowing the FEC to focus on critical national policy matters.

“This decision aligns with NEFGAD’s long-standing advocacy for the unbundling of contract approval thresholds, which have historically placed disproportionate approval powers in the hands of the Federal Executive Council, an organ that should primarily be concerned with policy direction, not contract approvals,” the statement read.

NEFGAD commended President Tinubu’s emphasis on transparency, particularly the mandate for MDAs to publish monthly procurement reports on their websites and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) portal. This measure, the group noted, will enhance accountability and strengthen public trust.

The advocacy group also expressed strong support for the Nigeria First Policy, which prioritises local goods and contractors, describing it as a visionary step to bolster the national economy and empower indigenous businesses.

Also speaking, the NEFGAD Country Director welcomed the requirement for BPP-accredited trainers for procurement-related training, a move seen as critical for building capacity and professionalising the public service.

“This is the kind of leadership that drives meaningful development and restores public confidence in governance,” NEFGAD stated.
