NDLEA Raids Indian Hemp Warehouse In C/River, Arrests Suspects
The Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rachel Umebuali, on Thursday, confirmed the arrest of three suspected drug dealers found with 2.687 tonnes of cannabis sativa.
Operatives of the agency, in collaboration with the State Security Adviser, Retired Maj. Gen. Okoi Obono, carried out a raid on a warehouse in Obereakai Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area, on Wednesday night.
The operation led to the arrest of suspects and the discovery of large quantities of the illegal substance, also known as Indian hemp.
Those arrested include 47-year-old Friday Archibong from Nsirebium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State; Abraham Anthony, 21; and Utibe David-Ojong, 24, both from Esit Eket in Eket Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests followed a tip-off which prompted NDLEA operatives to storm the area and uncover the warehouse allegedly used to store the drugs.
Parading the suspects before journalists in Calabar, Umebuali explained how the operation unfolded.
“After a tip-off, my boys who were on surveillance, raided the place and made a big catch by arresting three suspects alongside the cannabis sativa,” she said.
She stated that the suspects would be prosecuted.
“Those involved in this criminal act will hear from us. We will go after them until we fish them out and make them face the full weight of the law,” she added.
Addressing those cultivating banned plants, the state commander urged them to desist from the illegal trade.
“So long as they managed to get there, we too will get there. As it is their business, so is it our business too. We will smoke them out and make them face the full weight of the law,” Umebuali said.
The NDLEA urged members of the public to assist with useful information that could support ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse in the state.
