NCC Unveils Reforms to Boost Consumer Confidence in Nigeria’s Telecommunications Sector

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has commenced reforms aimed at restoring consumer confidence within the telecommunications industry.

The initiative comes in response to recent reports of persistent disruptions in services provided by major telecom operators, with users experiencing frequent call drops and data service outages.

To enhance transparency and accountability, the NCC has implemented several new measures.

One of the key strategies is the introduction of a tariff simplification method designed to eliminate price uncertainty that often confuses consumers.

Currently, telecom operators offer various tariffs and bonuses for data and call services, but the complexities and lack of clarity surrounding these plans have often left subscribers bewildered.

Under the new regulations, all tariffs that include promotional bonuses will be categorized strictly as promotions.

“Operators are required to submit detailed information regarding these promotions to the Consumer Affairs Bureau and the Technical Standard and Network Integrity (TSNI) for quality evaluations.

“Moving forward, the NCC will ensure that all benefits—such as voice minutes, SMS allowances, and data limits—are presented in a clear, user-friendly format, specifying details like the number of minutes, costs, and validity periods,” the commission stated.

Moreover, similar to reforms implemented in India, the NCC has limited the number of tariff plans that operators can offer simultaneously. This measure aims to make it easier for consumers to understand their options and make informed choices.

In tandem with the regulatory changes, the NCC has established a Joint Industry Committee focused on enhancing consumer awareness about smarter data management.

According to the commission, the campaign has been active since June 2024 and utilizes various outreach methods, including SMS blasts, social media engagement, and radio advertisements.

“The goal is to help consumers maximize their data usage while correcting misconceptions about data depletion,” the commission noted.

Officials have stated that the reforms are essential for fostering a healthier telecommunications environment in Nigeria and holding operators accountable for their service quality.

Consumers are expected to be informed of the new tariff simplifications by the end of November.

The NCC stated that the recent move will contribute significantly to GDP growth and innovation across various sectors in the country.

Meanwhile, in a significant move to enhance digital connectivity in Nigeria, the Nigerian government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with telecom equipment vendor Ericsson.

The partnership aims to develop the potential of 5G technology across the country.
The MoU establishes a framework of cooperation between the Nigerian government and Ericsson Nigeria, focusing on the development and deployment of 5G technology.
