Navy Intercepts 213 Bags Of Smuggled Foreign Rice In Lagos
The Executive Officer of the Naval Base, Commander Chukwudi Atuba, has said six vehicles loaded with smuggled foreign rice were intercepted along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, Lagos State.
Atuba disclosed that the operation carried out on January 22 was based on intelligence reports that revealed the movement of illicit goods.
“In executing our statutory responsibilities, the Naval Base Epe intercepted six vehicles laden with smuggled foreign rice. On sighting our team, the suspects abandoned their vehicles and fled into the bush, leaving behind the contraband,” he stated.
The contraband, comprising 213 bags of foreign rice, was subsequently handed over by Navy Lieutenant A.S. Bello to Deputy Comptroller Odoemenah of the Nigerian Customs Service, who received it on behalf of Comptroller Olajide of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja.
“To foster inter-agency cooperation, we are officially handing over the seized bags of rice to the Nigerian Customs Service for further necessary action,” Atuba stated.
He reiterated the Navy’s commitment to eradicating illegal activities within its jurisdiction, emphasizing that its operations align with the vision of Vice Admiral Ikechukwu Ogala.
“The Nigerian Navy, in line with the mission and vision of Vice Admiral Ikechukwu Ogala, remains resolute and determined to rid the environment of all illegalities,” he stated.
Issuing a stern warning to smugglers and criminal elements, Atuba cautioned against engaging in illicit activities, particularly in the Epe-Ijebu-Ode axis, where the Navy maintains strict surveillance.
“Smugglers should understand that these activities will not benefit them. The Nigerian Navy is determined to rid the maritime environment and other areas under its jurisdiction of illegality,” he reiterated.
