Nasarawa government to introduce toll on 65km Kwandere-Garaku road linking Lafia to Keffi

The Nasarawa State Government has announced plans to introduce toll charges on the 65-kilometre Kwandere–Garaku Road once construction is completed, citing the need for sustainable maintenance of the key infrastructure project.

The road, which is currently under construction, is expected to serve as a strategic alternative route connecting Lafia to Keffi and, by extension, to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

It is projected to reduce travel time by over 30 kilometres compared to the existing Lafia–Akwanga–Keffi corridor, which is frequently congested.

Speaking during a ministerial briefing in Lafia, the state’s Commissioner for Works and Transportation, Mr Mu’azu Gosho, stated that tolling the road is a practical measure to ensure its upkeep, given the anticipated volume of traffic it will attract.

“This road will significantly ease movement between Lafia and Abuja, making it a preferred route for both private motorists and commercial transporters,” Gosho said.

“Because of its importance and the expected influx of heavy-duty trucks, we must ensure it is properly maintained, hence, the decision to introduce tolling.”

He further noted that the Governor Abdullahi Sule-led administration is committed to completing key infrastructure projects inherited from previous governments, with the Kwandere–Garaku Road ranking high among them.

“This administration has made it a priority to finish major projects that will impact economic growth and regional connectivity,” he added.

The tolling initiative, once implemented, will mark a shift toward user-funded road maintenance in the state, aligning with national conversations on infrastructure sustainability and reducing the burden on public finances.
