The Federal Ministry of Environment has warned of possible heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and surrounding states between July 31 and August 4, 2025.

In a statement by the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS), the ministry said 11 locations within the FCT may be affected by downpours that could lead to flooding.

The areas include Asokoro, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Damagaza, Garki 1 & 2, Guzape, Wuse 1 & 2, Gwarinpa, Nyanya, Central Business District (CBD), and Kubwa.

In response to the alert on Thursday, the Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the agency has placed its Search and Rescue Team on red alert to forestall loss of life in case of flooding.

“Please do not drive or wade into a pool of water. Wait for the water to recede or use an alternative route. Please clear your drains to ensure free flow of water,” Engr. Abdulrahman warned.

He further assured that FEMD is actively monitoring water levels and is prepared to mitigate the potential impact of the floods across the Territory.

The flood alert also extends to states contiguous to the FCT, with Niger, Nasarawa, and Kaduna expected to be affected.

In Niger State, areas at high risk include Suleja, Mashegu, Sarkin Pawa, and Rijau.

In Nasarawa State, Mararaba, Gidan Rogo, Wamba, Agima, Rukubi, and Odogbo are expected to witness heavy floods.

Similarly, five locations in Kaduna State—Zaria, Jaji, Kauru, Kachia, and Buruku, are projected to experience significant flooding during the forecast period.

Residents in all listed areas are advised to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to reduce the risk of disaster.

This is coming days after the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that a total of five people died and over 55 injured following severe flooding in parts of Yola town, the capital of Adamawa State after a heavy downpour.

THE WHISTLER reported that the agency’s Head of Operations in Yola, Ladan Ayuba, said the torrential rain, which began in the early hours of Sunday, July 27, submerged homes, displaced dozens of families, and caused destruction in several wards across the state capital.

The communities severely impacted include Tashan Sani, Shagari Phase Il, Sabon Pegi, Anguwan Tabo, Modire, Ummare, Yolde-Pate, Sanda Fadama Il, and Ibnu Abbas.
