NANS Zone ‘A’ Elects New Executive, Laments Arbitrary Increase In School Fees

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone ‘A’ has elected new executives to pilot the affairs of the association for the 2024/2025 academic session across the zone.

This was according to a communique shortly after the Association’s 38th Elective Congress held at the Kaduna State University from September 27-29, released to journalists in Kaduna on Tuesday.

The congress was attended by 67 accredited delegates from the seven states in the zone.

According to the communique which was endorsed by Dominic Philip, Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee, Comr. Umar Suleiman Doko, Chairman, Convention Committee, Amb. Ahmed Bashir Magaji, Secretary, Communique Drafting Committee, respectively, the elected officials are – Coordinator: Said Garba Sadi (Bayero University Kano), Deputy Coordinator: Ibrahim Adamu Dikko (Kebbi University of Science and Technology, Alero), Secretary-General: Bashir Mohammed Ibrahim (Kaduna State University), Financial Secretary: Mohammed Abdullahi (Bayero University Kano), Treasurer: Maryam Muhammed Usman (HUK Poly).

Others include -Director of Gender –Firdausi Hamza (Informatics Kazaure), Director of Sports –Gazali Moh’d Gadanya (Kano Poly), PRO –Abubakar Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto State University), Director of Travels and Exchange –Al-Amin Salisu (ABU Zaria), Director Special Duties–Habibullahi Bello (College of Education, Maru) and Ex-Officio –Sadiq Abdullahi Maikano (Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic, Hadeja)

This was subject to affirmation which was presided over by the Convention Chairman who is the Chief Electoral/Returning Officer, and Convention Clerk, nominated and affirmed as Comrade Umar Suleiman Doko and Lawal Isah Federal respectively, to ensure a transparent, according to the communique.

Meanwhile, the congress also approved the establishment of three new directorates: Peace, Integration and Reconciliation; Gender Equality Matters; and Action and Mobilisation.

Magaji Kabiru, Director of Peace, Integration and Reconciliation (FCAPT Kano), Comr. Umar Shuaibu, (PA) (FCEZARIA), Director of Gender Equality Matters, while Suleiman Yusuf(SLU Kafin Hausa), takes charge as Director of Action and Mobilisation.

With the new executives in place, NANS Zone ‘A’, said it was poised to address the challenges facing Nigerian students and promote student welfare.

The association promised to prioritise student welfare and advocate for affordable education, noting that “We will work tirelessly to address the challenges facing Nigerian students, particularly the arbitrary increase in school fees and inadequate funding for education.”

NANS Zone ‘A’ comprises tertiary institutions from seven states in the Northwest region, including Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

The congress also resolved to urge the Federal Government to establish more Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion service stations and provide CNG buses to tertiary institutions to ease transportation challenges on campuses within the Zone and beyond.

“We commend the Federal Government for establishing the National Education Loan Fund, but we urge them to make it more accessible to students,” the Association said.

However, the association expressed concern over the exponential increase in school fees across tertiary institutions in the country and called for urgent attention from stakeholders.

“NANS will continue to advocate for affordable education and better living conditions for Nigerian students,” the Communique added.

The congress commended the Kaduna State Government for its support and hospitality during the event.

“We appreciate the Kaduna State Government for providing a conducive environment for our congress,” while pledging continued support to the government led by Senator Uba Sani.

The association admonished students to prioritise dialogue through constitutional means amidst economic hardships, discouraging involvement in destructive activities.

“We will work with the government to promote student welfare and advocate for better education policies,” the communique added.
