NAFDAC Uncovers Repackaged Expired Condoms
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered shops where expired condoms are being repackaged during an enforcement operation at the Idumota open drug market in Lagos.
A statement shared on the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday revealed more products, including unregistered narcotics, counterfeit GSK medicines and vaccines stored in unconducive places like toilets.
Some of the condoms said to have been donated by USAID and UNFPA have expired since 2022, and were being repackaged into Kiss Condom packs with the expiring date extended to 2027, as explained by one NAFDAC official in a shared video.
The agency further reported the seizure of banned drugs such as Analgin, improperly stored vaccines intended for cold-chain storage and Oxytocin—an essential maternal health drug—found outside the required temperature conditions.
Recall that NAFDAC disclosed on Monday, February 17, that over 3,000 shops have been screened and placed on hold in the ongoing enforcement operation at the Idumota open drug market, and arrested over 10 suspected drug peddlers.
It added that some counterfeit and unregistered drugs were also discovered.
The NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, assured that the agency will not rest on its oars until the market is completely sanitized.
