MTN Nigeria Plc, a leading telecommunications company on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), has achieved a remarkable market value increase of N881.81bn, solidifying its position as one of the week’s top performers.

The company’s stock experienced sustained demand, closing the week on Friday with a 21 per cent increase in its share price, elevating its market capitalization to an impressive N5.08trn.

According to an analysis by THE WHISTLER, MTN Nigeria’s stock price surged from N200 per share at the start of trading on Monday, January 6, to N242 per share by the end of the week. This 21 per cent increase represents a strong recovery from its recent low of N170.

This resurgence is largely attributed to successful fundraising activities in the debt market, which have helped the company address its working capital needs.

However, MTN Nigeria continues to grapple with challenges, including foreign exchange losses and other financial pressures.

Analysts warn that the stock’s recovery could face headwinds, with its trajectory depending on positive outcomes in telecom tower lease renegotiations and efforts to localize its debt obligations.

By the close of the trading week, MTN Nigeria’s market capitalization stood at N5.08trn, a significant jump from N4.199trn recorded at the beginning of the week. This translates to a market value gain of N881.81trn.

While MTN Nigeria led in terms of market value, other companies also recorded notable gains during the week. Multiverse Mining and Exploration Plc emerged as the top gainer, achieving a 53.42 per cent increase in its share price, which climbed from N8.05 to N12.35.

Honeywell Flour Mills Plc also performed impressively, with its shares appreciating by 31.67 per cent to close at N10.02 per share, up from N7.61. Similarly, Daar Communications Plc experienced significant growth, as its share price rose by 25.71 per cent, moving from 70 kobo to 88 kobo.

The overall performance of the Nigerian Exchange was positive, with the NGX All-Share Index rising by 1.80 per cent to settle at 105,451.06 points. Market capitalization also increased to N64.303trn, reflecting a boost in investor confidence.

During the week, investors traded 4.698bn shares worth N85.043bn in 72,562 deals. This was a significant improvement compared to the previous week’s turnover of 2.618bn shares valued at N69.742bn across 47,953 deals.

While most indices closed higher, a few sectors experienced declines. The NGX Insurance Index recorded the steepest drop, falling by 6.91 per cent.

The NGX AFR Bank Value Index and NGX AFR Div Yield Index also declined, shedding 0.08 per cent and 1.11 per cent, respectively. Additionally, the NGX Consumer Goods, Oil and Gas, and Industrial Goods indices each saw minor decreases of 0.34 per cent. Meanwhile, the NGX ASeM Index remained unchanged throughout the week.

Market analysts attribute the positive trajectory to increased demand pressure for stocks listed on the NGX, marking a rebound from a bearish trend in preceding weeks.

MTN Nigeria’s strong performance highlights its resilience despite prevailing economic challenges. As the company continues to implement strategic measures to address financial pressures, it remains well-positioned to maintain its leadership on the NGX. The broader market’s improved turnover and investor sentiment suggest a favorable outlook for the coming weeks.
