Mojisola Miranda: Meet New Speaker Of Lagos Assembly

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, was impeached on Monday by his fellow lawmakers.

Following the impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, the representative of Apapa I, was elected as the new Speaker.

Meranda took her oath of office immediately after the election, making history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State Legislature.

Born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos, Meranda attended Randle Primary School and Anglican Girls Grammar School. She pursued her higher education at Lagos State University and later obtained a graduate degree from the University of Lagos.

Before joining the Lagos State House of Assembly, Meranda worked as a political aide in the Apapa Local Government Area between 2008 and 2014.

She had also served as the office manager of Cirrus Nigeria Limited in Lekki, Lagos, and was the managing director/CEO of Worthline International Services Limited, a company she founded.

Her political career began as a member of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), which transitioned into the Action Congress (AC), then the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and finally the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meranda was first elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015.

In the 8th Assembly, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA). She also chaired the House Committee on Establishment, Training, Pension, and Public Service.

During the 9th Assembly, Meranda served as the Chief Whip. She was later elected Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly, a position she held until her eventual emergence as Speaker.
