‘Mind Your Eyes’ – Doctors Caution Sokoto Journalists During Free Treatment At World Glaucoma Day
In observance of World Glaucoma Day, eye specialists from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto, held an awareness campaign for journalists in the state at the state NUJ Council Secretariat.
The team of eye specialists offered free eye screenings, medication, glasses, and guidance on eye health, debunked myths surrounding eye conditions, and shared tips for maintaining healthy eyes.
Led by Dr Mustapha Bature, Consultant and Head of the Ophthalmology Department at UDUTH, the medical team urged the public to take proper care of their eyes, highlighting that the eyes are one of the most sensitive organs in the human body.
Dr Bature said glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness and noted that early detection and treatment could prevent permanent vision loss.
“Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, and once vision is lost to glaucoma, it cannot be regained.
“That is why we believe it is crucial to inform the public about the importance of early eye check-ups to preserve vision and maintain a good quality of life,” he said.
He said they decided to partner with the media to reach a wider audience in recognition of the significant role journalists play in disseminating information.
According to him, doctors and journalists share a long-standing relationship, and journalists have access to all corners of society, including places where they cannot easily reach.
“By partnering with the media, we are indirectly reaching the entire community with our message,” he added.
The Chairman of the NUJ Sokoto State Council, Comrade Usman Binji, expressed his appreciation for the partnership, aligning it with his leadership commitment to enhancing the well-being of members.
“During our electioneering campaign, we pledged to improve the welfare of our members, not only financially but also by prioritising their health.
“That’s why we invited these medical experts to provide free eye screenings for our members,” he said.
Several journalists who benefitted from the initiative described the partnership as valuable, noting that both media and healthcare agencies play crucial roles in promoting a healthy society.
