Microsoft has announced plans to lay off approximately 6,000 employees worldwide, representing nearly three per cent of its global workforce, as part of a broader organisational restructuring aimed at streamlining operations and enhancing agility in a rapidly evolving market.
The technology giant, which employed 228,000 full-time workers as of June 2024, confirmed the layoffs on Tuesday, though it did not specify which departments or roles would be most affected.
The job cuts will span across various locations and functions, with a significant emphasis on reducing layers of management.
In a statement, Microsoft said, “We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.” Affected employees were formally notified this week, and the process is expected to continue over the coming days.
This latest round of job cuts follows a smaller performance-based layoff earlier in the year. However, the current reduction marks the largest workforce downsizing by Microsoft since early 2023, when it cut 10,000 jobs, or about five per cent of its workforce, citing similar restructuring goals.
Despite the reductions, Microsoft’s financial performance has remained strong. The company recently reported robust sales and healthy profit margins, underscoring its ongoing success in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and enterprise services.
The layoffs appear to be less about immediate financial pressures and more focused on long-term strategic alignment and operational efficiency.
Industry analysts suggest that Microsoft’s move reflects a broader trend across the tech sector, where firms are reassessing internal structures and workforce needs in light of AI-driven transformation and shifting business priorities.
Microsoft has not disclosed whether the impacted employees will be offered severance packages or job transition support, though the company has historically provided such assistance during past layoffs.
The restructuring is expected to continue throughout 2025 as Microsoft sharpens its focus on growth areas while maintaining operational discipline amid increasing competition and changing market dynamics.
