A yet-to-be-identified officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is set to have his right leg amputated after sustaining severe injuries when a trailer rammed into him on Tuesday in Lagos State.

The incident occurred at Ojodu Berger while the officer was on his way to resume his afternoon duty.

It was gathered that the trailer driver was speeding excessively and lost control, resulting in the devastating crash.

Following an emergency assessment at the Surgical Emergency Centre of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), specialists determined that the severity of the officer’s injuries required an immediate amputation of his right leg.

LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident, stating that the impact of the crash also affected the victim’s hand.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the ill-fated trailer, bearing Bauchi State registration number KTG 33 ZZ, originated from Agidingbi by Oba Ogunji Road en route to Omole Junction in the Ogba corridor when the driver, operating at an alarmingly high velocity, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a catastrophic collision.

“The sheer impact of the crash inflicted severe trauma on the LASTMA officer, leading to a grievous fracture of his right leg and hand,” Adebayo said in a statement on Wednesday.

In an attempt to evade justice, the driver fled the scene. However, security operatives from the Ojodu Police Station, in collaboration with LASTMA officials, apprehended him.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, visited the injured officer at LASUTH, condemning the reckless driving that led to the crash. He emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided had the driver adhered to road safety regulations.

He urged trailer and truck operators, as well as all motorists, to prioritize safety and recognize the value of human life.

“LASTMA officers are not adversaries to motorists; rather, they are dedicated to ensuring that traffic flows seamlessly, thereby fostering economic growth and urban efficiency in Lagos State,” Bakare-Oki said.

Expressing his sympathies, he wished the officer a swift recovery and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to road safety and orderliness on Lagos highways.
