LASTMA Impounds 235 Vehicles For Traffic Violations In One Day

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 235 vehicles in a large-scale enforcement operation aimed at restoring traffic order and urban discipline across key areas of Lagos.

The crackdown, which began on Thursday, targeted several high-traffic zones, including Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi. These areas have long suffered from congestion, illegal parking, and flagrant disregard for traffic regulations.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency embarked on the operation as part of a statewide clean-up initiative directed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa.

He noted that the vehicles impounded included private cars, commercial buses, popularly known as Danfo, mini-buses, tricycles, haulage trucks, and inter-state passenger buses.

The offences ranged from obstruction of traffic flow and illegal use of pedestrian walkways to the operation of unauthorised motor parks and other violations under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

One particularly serious violation occurred on the Adeniji Adele Bridge, where five articulated trucks were caught offloading livestock and abattoir waste. Thereby compromising both public safety and the structural integrity of the bridge. The drivers involved have been arrested and are expected to face prosecution.

Bakare-Oki declared that LASTMA has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to traffic offences and warned that all impounded vehicles would be prosecuted before the Lagos State Mobile Court.

He stressed that the operation is not intended to target any specific group but to correct years of systemic indiscipline on Lagos roads. According to him, this is an opportunity for residents to embrace responsible road usage and civic responsibility.

“LASTMA is now operating under a strict zero-tolerance mandate against traffic infractions. All impounded vehicles will be promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution. The era of impunity on our roads is over,” Bakare-Oki declared, through a statement issued by LASTMA’s spokesperson, Mr. Adebayo Tofiq .

“This operation is not an attack on any demographic or commercial interest; it is an overdue rectification of systemic dysfunction. We call upon every road user to embrace this moment as an invitation to collective civic renewal.”

The ongoing clean-up is part of a broader effort by the Lagos State Government to improve road safety, enhance mobility, and elevate the city’s livability index.

The operation will continue across all five administrative divisions of the state—Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe—with support from partner agencies and the use of surveillance technology to ensure compliance.
