The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has issued a warning to residents, urging them to avoid rickety and poorly maintained vehicles, which contribute significantly to road accidents across the state.

The warning follows a recent operation by VIS operatives, which led to the apprehension of several dangerously dilapidated vehicles from different parts of Lagos.

According to the Director of VIS, Engr. Akin-George Fashola, in a statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, said the condition of the seized vehicles—one of which he intercepted—was alarming.

He described them as being in severe states of disrepair, with expired tyres, makeshift brake systems, and rusted body parts, making them unfit for commercial use and hazardous to both passengers and other road users.

Fashola noted that many of them lack basic safety features and are often operated under the cover of darkness, increasing the risk to unsuspecting passengers.

He explained that the continued use of such vehicles has been linked to numerous road crashes resulting in fatalities, injuries, and destruction of property.

Fashola assured the public that the impounded vehicles would not be released back into circulation.

He also reaffirmed the VIS’s commitment to maintaining road safety through sustained enforcement efforts and collaboration with transport unions and other relevant stakeholders.

He urged Lagosians to prioritise their safety and report any suspicious or rickety vehicles to the VIS through its official complaint platforms.

“Reassuring the public, Engr. Fashola confirmed that the impounded vehicles will not be released for further use. He added that the VIS is working closely with relevant stakeholders, including road transport unions, to ensure Lagos roads remain safe for all users.

“He also encouraged members of the public to report any sightings or experiences with rickety vehicles via the VIS complaint platforms at info@dvis.lg.gov.ng or through the Ministry of Transportation hotlines: 09020004000 and 09020009000,” the statement added.
