Lagos To Close Major Bridge For Four Months

The Lagos State Government has said it would close a major bridge, the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge, for almost four months beginning Tuesday and ending Tuesday, 23rd September 2025 for repairs.

It advised motorists to follow a detailed diversion plan to ease traffic disruption during the period.

According to a statement on Tuesday signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the maintenance work will be executed in eight phases, affecting both inbound and outbound sections of the bridge.

Phases 1 to 4, covering 6th May to 14th July, will focus on the inbound section of the bridge towards Third Mainland Bridge, while Phases 5 to 8, from 15th July to 23rd September, will address the outbound lane.

To manage traffic flow, the government has introduced alternative routes for motorists coming from different parts of the city.

During the inbound lane repairs, motorists heading to Victoria Island via the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge will be diverted 50 metres before the repair site and return to the main road 50 metres after.

Those coming from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are advised to use Ojota Slip Road through Ikorodu Road to Anthony, then take the ramp by the Taxi Park to Oshodi, or link Anthony via Town Planning Way to access Gbagada and continue through Third Mainland Bridge.

Motorists from Mowe and nearby areas can take Ojota Slip Road to Funsho Williams Avenue and connect Eko Bridge, while those from Ikeja and environs are advised to pass through Maryland to Ikorodu Road and proceed via Eko Bridge/Outer Marina.

During the outbound lane repairs, a similar 50-metre diversion strategy will be employed. Motorists heading to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will be guided through a bypass lane and return to the main road after the work zone.

For outbound journeys from Victoria Island to Alapere, Ketu or Ikorodu, motorists are advised to use Eko Bridge to Funsho Williams Avenue, then access Ikorodu Road via Ojota and Ketu. Those heading to Mowe and environs should also go through Eko Bridge and Funsho Williams Avenue, then take Ikorodu Road to Abiola Garden Ramp.

Osiyemi assured that LASTMA officers will be deployed along major routes to manage traffic and minimise inconvenience.

He urged residents to remain patient as the partial bridge closure is essential for the maintenance of the bridge’s expansion joints under the supervision of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

“Motorists are implored to be patient as the Partial Bridge closure is part of the traffic management plans for the maintenance works on the Expansion joints of the bridge by Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure (Office of Infrastructure),” Osiyemi stated.
