Lagos Records 1,675 Road, Fire Incidents, Other Emergencies In 2024

Lagos State recorded a total of 1,675 emergency incidents between January 1 and December 31, 2024.

This was disclosed by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Okunbor Nosa.

Of the 1,675 incidents recorded in 2024, 167 occurred in December alone. This brings the total number of emergencies attended to by the agency from June 1, 2019, to December 31, 2024, to 8,117 under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

In December 2024, road accidents topped the list with 58 vehicular crashes, followed by 43 incidents involving trucks and tankers, including 29 accidents, 11 breakdowns, two fallen vehicles, and one stuck tanker.

Fire disasters ranked third with 33 cases, consisting of 31 fire outbreaks, one burnt truck/tanker, and one burnt car/BRT bus. Other incidents included 15 miscellaneous cases, one well-related incident, and one assault.

Medical emergencies accounted for 13 cases, while building collapses, explosions, and gas leaks recorded one case each. No marine, train, or air crashes were reported in December.

Eti-Osa Local Government Area recorded the highest number of incidents in December, with 23 cases, followed by Ikeja (22 cases) and Alimosho (21 cases). Kosofe ranked fourth with 15 cases, while Mushin and Lagos Mainland each recorded 12 cases.

Lagos Island reported 11 cases, Oshodi-Isolo had 10, and Shomolu reported eight cases. Other LGAs recorded the following: Apapa (7), Surulere (6), Ifako-Ijaiye (5), and Amuwo-Odofin (3).

Agege, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, Epe, Ojo, and areas outside Lagos reported two incidents each, while Badagry and Ajeromi-Ifelodun recorded no emergencies.

In 2024, road accidents ranked second overall, with 438 vehicle crashes, 18 breakdowns, and two other incidents, totaling 458 cases.

Truck and tanker-related emergencies were the most common, accounting for 507 cases, including 345 accidents, 129 breakdowns, 19 fallen vehicles, 10 fallen containers, and four stuck trucks.

Fire disasters ranked third, with 285 cases, including 266 fire outbreaks, seven tanker/truck fires, and 12 vehicle fires.

The year also saw three train crashes, six marine incidents (three floodings and three boat mishaps), six spillages (three gas, one diesel, one pipeline, and one gas tanker), and nine explosions (eight gas and one pipeline).

Alimosho LGA reported the highest number of cases in 2024, with 262 incidents, followed by Ikeja (185 cases) and Eti-Osa (168 cases). In contrast, Badagry recorded the fewest cases (4), followed by Ajeromi-Ifelodun (17) and Ifako-Ijaiye (20).

December 2024 recorded the highest number of incidents (167), followed by February (156) and March (148). The lowest numbers were recorded in August (121), July (123), and June/September (126 each).

Between June 1, 2019, and December 31, 2024, LASEMA attended to 8,117 incidents. The year 2021 recorded the highest number (1,743 cases), followed by 2022 (1,682 cases) and 2024 (1,675 cases), indicating a downward trend.

“On it’s part, the Monthly Emergency Trends revealed that the most cases in a month was recorded in December, 2024 with 167 cases, followed by February in second place with 156 cases and March in third place with 148 cases, while the lowest number of incidents was recorded in August, Y2024, with 121 cases, followed by July with 123 cases then June and September placing third with 126 cases each.

“In the last six years (1st June, 2019-31st December, 2024), the Agency has attended to 8117 incidents in Lagos State where the highest number of incidents was recorded in Y2021 with 1,743 cases, followed by 1,682 recorded cases in Y2022 placing second in a downward trend, while Data recorded that the Agency attended to 1,675 cases in Y2024,” Okunbor said in a statement.
