Lagos Govt Restricts Working Hours At Building Sites
The Lagos State Government has imposed restrictions on working hours at building sites across the state, limiting construction activities to between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide in Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday.
Olumide emphasized that all parties involved in building construction must strictly adhere to this restriction, noting that relevant government agencies would be tasked with enforcing compliance.
However, according to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mukaila Sanusi, exceptions to this rule could be granted through formal applications, which would be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Olumide explained that the decision to restrict working hours was necessary to protect the environment, prevent building collapses, and promote the overall social well-being and health of residents.
He also urged residents to report any construction sites found to be violating the order.
This directive comes just weeks after a tragic incident in which a four-storey building collapsed on Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger area of the state.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that five people died in the collapse, while approximately 13 others were rescued alive.
THE WHISTLER reported that the incident occurred shortly after two adult males were rescued from the rubble of a one-storey building that collapsed in the Idumota area of the state.
The incident took place on Agarawu Street, near Aroloya Central Mosque and the Idumota Bus Stop on Lagos Island.
In a similar incident in March, a building under construction in Lekki collapsed, resulting in at least 14 people being rescued and taken to the hospital. Tragically, two victims were later confirmed dead.
