A road accident that occurred on Thursday along the Lekki-Ajah expressway in Lagos left a commercial bus driver in a coma and one passenger severely injured after an over-speeding Ford Jeep crashed into their vehicle.

The incident happened near Ikota School, inward Ajah.

In a video seen by THE WHISTLER, some passersby can be heard calling for bottled water as emergency responders were making efforts to facilitate the rescue process and ensure traffic is not totally impeded in the area.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Jeep was allegedly speeding and lost control before ramming into the moving mini-bus.

The impact of the collision caused extensive damage to the bus.

The bus driver reportedly suffered a major fracture to his right arm and slipped into a coma, while a passenger sustained severe nasal bleeding and was rendered unconscious at the scene.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the Ford Jeep, while allegedly traveling at a dangerously high speed, lost control of the vehicle and violently rammed into the moving commercial mini-bus.

“The resulting impact left the mini-bus extensively damaged. Regrettably, the bus driver slipped into a coma after suffering a severe fracture to his right arm, while a passenger aboard the vehicle sustained intense nasal hemorrhaging and was rendered unconscious at the scene,” Adebayo said in a statement.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, decried the dangers of reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding.

“Excessive speed remains a foremost contributor to fatal road incidents. Motorists are strongly advised to exercise prudence and prioritize life over haste,” he stated.

Bakare-Oki expressed his heartfelt wishes for the speedy recovery of the victims and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring road safety through efficient traffic management and continuous public sensitization.

THE WHISTLER reports that two dispatch riders lost their lives on May 11 following a crash involving two laden trucks on Ekong Bridge.
