Kano NDLEA Apprehends 1,345 Suspects In 12 Months

…Seizes 8,43m KG Assorted Illicit Substances

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, has reported that 1,345 suspects were arrested by the command in 2024.

This was disclosed by the Kano Command spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.

He stated that 1,301 men and 44 women were arrested, and 8,430.239 kg of various illegal substances, including cannabis sativa, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, Tramadol, and codeine, were seized.

The statement reads, “Kano State Command, under the leadership of CN AI Ahmad, is delighted to announce its impressive achievements in the fight against illicit substances in 2024.

“This year has seen a concerted effort to combat drug-related offences, resulting in the arrest of 1,345 suspects—1,301 males and 44 females—and the seizure of an impressive 8,430.239 kg of assorted illicit substances, including Cannabis Sativa, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, Tramadol, and codeine.

“Among these significant seizures were over 5,000,000 tablets of Tramadol intercepted along the Zaria-Kano Road in a single seizure, disrupting the supply chain and significantly reducing the availability of these harmful substances in Kano State.

“A highlight of the year was the apprehension of Lawan Sani Hobe, who was involved in an attack on an NDLEA officer. After a 10-month manhunt, Hobe was captured, prosecuted, and sentenced to five years in prison, sending a strong message to those engaged in illicit activities.

“In a bid to enhance operational effectiveness, the State Commander initiated ‘Operation Hana Maye’, which successfully dismantled over 20 drug joints in notorious areas such as Filin Idi, Dan Agundi, Sani Abacha Youths Center, and Sani Abacha Stadium. These operations have played a critical role in fostering a safer environment for the citizens of Kano State.

“The NDLEA has also made notable strides in prosecution, securing 128 convictions in 2024. Among these successes is the conviction of 12 drug peddlers arrested at the Filin Idi drug den in a single day. The convicts were found guilty of orchestrating drug trafficking activities at the notorious Filin Idi drug den.

“Each of the 12 individuals received a 3-year prison sentence, with no option of a fine, effectively bringing drug peddling in that area to a historical end.

“Other notable convictions for various drug-related offences include: Ibrahim Tahir, sentenced to 9 years, James Temitope Ajayi, an ex-convict, sentenced to 7 years, Adekunle Sunday Adebayo, sentenced to 6 years, Salisu Mohammed, a dismissed police Inspector previously convicted three times for cocaine dealing, was sentenced to 5 years.

“Additionally, Abubakar Muazu was convicted following a dramatic arrest where an NDLEA officer was attacked and injured. Despite the danger, the officers remained steadfast, successfully apprehending Muazu and uncovering various illicit substances hidden by him.

“The NDLEA Kano State Command has also made significant strides in promoting drug integrity, conducting 1,114 drug integrity tests in 2024.

“A notable outcome of these efforts is the requirement for aspiring candidates in Local Government elections to undergo drug integrity testing, ensuring that only individuals who test negative for drug use are eligible to contest.

“This initiative promotes responsible leadership and good governance while addressing the prevalence of drug abuse in Nigeria.

“Furthermore, within the year under review, the Command successfully conducted 202 visa clearance tests, demonstrating its commitment to ensuring that individuals travelling in and out of the country do not pose a risk to national security or public health.

“This visa clearance process is crucial in preventing the trafficking of illicit drugs and protecting the country’s reputation.

“In addition to its enforcement efforts, the NDLEA Kano State Command has also achieved notable progress in rehabilitating individuals struggling with drug addiction. In 2024, the command admitted 101 drug addicts into its rehabilitation program.

“Through this program, individuals receive comprehensive care and support to overcome their addiction. The command’s rehabilitation efforts are designed to not only treat the physical aspects of addiction but also to address the underlying psychological and emotional issues that contribute to substance abuse.

“Some of the individuals who underwent the rehabilitation have since been discharged, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards recovery. The command’s rehabilitation program has helped these individuals to reintegrate back into society, equipped with the skills and support needed to maintain a drug-free lifestyle.

“In its community engagement efforts, the NDLEA Kano State Command conducted 207 anti-drug campaigns, sensitizing the public about the devastating effects of substance abuse and trafficking.

“These campaigns targeted various segments of the population, including schools, community leaders, marketplaces, and streets, aiming to educate and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of reporting suspected cases of drug trafficking.

“Most notably, the State Commander commends the officers and men of the command for their tireless efforts, commitment, and professionalism in discharging their duties. Their dedication has been instrumental in achieving the command’s objectives.

“As we look to the new year, the NDLEA Kano State Command is poised to continue its efforts, leveraging intelligence-driven operations and community partnerships to dismantle drug trafficking networks and promote a safer, healthier society for all.”
