Kaduna State Eyes South African Partnership to Transform Mining Sector

Kaduna State is positioning itself as a strategic hub for precious metals processing following high-level discussions between Governor Uba Sani and South African refinery giant Precious Metals Tswane (PMT) during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.

The meeting, which took place as part of Nigeria’s delegation activities at the summit, centred on an ambitious proposal that could significantly expand precious metals refining operations in Nigeria, with Kaduna State identified as the preferred location.

Governor Sani on X revealed that PMT, a distinguished South African refinery with established expertise in processing precious metals for industry professionals, presented a comprehensive partnership model designed to transform the local mining value chain.

“Their model encompasses the purchase and processing of raw materials supplied by artisanal miners, supported by a strong framework of technology transfer, capacity building, and global market integration anchored in sustainable Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles,” Governor Sani explained.

The proposed operation would bring substantial processing capacity to Kaduna State, with PMT capable of handling up to two tonnes of precious metals daily. Plans are already advancing for the establishment of an aggregation and processing centre in the state.

The governor emphasised that the partnership aligns with his administration’s vision for responsible mining sector development. “I reiterated that Kaduna State remains open to reputable partners committed to elevating our mining and mineral-processing ecosystem through responsible practices, technical excellence, and long-term investment,” he stated.

Governor Sani outlined the administration’s priorities for the sector, saying, “Our administration is dedicated to attracting investors who will create value, generate employment, and deepen local competencies as we pursue a mining sector positioned for global competitiveness.”

The engagement represents part of broader efforts by the Kaduna State government to leverage international partnerships for economic development.

“This engagement formed part of our activities as members of the Nigerian delegation to the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, where we continue to cultivate strategic partnerships for sustainable economic growth and national development,” the governor noted.

He concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the state’s economic transformation: “We remain steadfast in advancing Kaduna’s prosperity and growth.”

The proposed partnership, if finalised, would mark a significant step in developing Nigeria’s precious metals sector while providing formal market access for artisanal miners and creating employment opportunities in Kaduna State.
