The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed that a 12-year-old boy was killed while seven others were injured in the Abakpa area of Kaduna on Tuesday.

According to the police, the incident was caused by an accidental discharge from a Dane gun, contrary to earlier reports of an explosion.

The command issued the clarification in a statement released by its Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Mansir Hassan.

According to the statement, the police received a distress call reporting what was believed to be a blast along Josawa Road, Abakpa.

Hassan said a team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kawo Division immediately arrived at the scene.

“The incident claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy, identified as Abubakar Muhammed of Josawa Road. “Seven other individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement read.

He added that a delegation comprising the Commissioner of Police, the Garrison Commander, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government also visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

Hassan further disclosed that preliminary investigations by the Police Anti-Bomb Squad ruled out any explosion, and confirmed instead that the injuries were caused by the accidental discharge from the Dane gun.

“Further investigations and assessments are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” he added.

The Command extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and wished swift recovery to the injured victims. It also reassured the public of transparency and timely updates as the investigation continues.

The authorities urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as they work to unravel the full details behind the incident.
