Judiciary Workers Suspend Planned Strike After CJN’s Intervention

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has suspended its proposed nationwide strike for two weeks, following a series of high-level interventions and negotiations.

The industrial action, which was initially scheduled to begin on Monday, June 2, 2025, has been put on hold to give room for the resolution of pending issues affecting judiciary workers.

In a statement on Sunday, Public Relations Officer of the JUSUN at the National Judicial Council (NJC), Mr Joel Ebiloma, said the suspension came after several meetings involving union leaders, the Minister of Labour, and other judiciary stakeholders.

The meetings, held within the past 48 hours, were convened at the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, in a bid to avert the shutdown of courts nationwide.

According to the statement, stakeholders agreed to a two-week window for the Minister of Labour and relevant authorities to resolve outstanding issues, particularly with the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

A major point of contention is the delayed release of statutory allocations to the judiciary, as provided in the 2025 Appropriation Act. These allocations cover arrears from the Wage Award, the newly approved minimum wage, and a 25%/35% salary increment.

“Following the circular announcing the planned strike at the federal judiciary level, scheduled for June 2, a number of meetings were held involving JUSUN representatives, the Minister of Labour, and other stakeholders. These deliberations have led to a temporary suspension of the action,” the statement read.

JUSUN directed all judiciary staff to resume duties on Monday, June 2, while expressing optimism that the government would fulfil its commitments within the grace period.

The union also acknowledged the leadership and efforts of the Secretary of the NJC, Malam Ahmed Gambo Saleh, expressing confidence in his ability to help secure the release of the necessary funds.

“We appreciate the patience, resilience, and unity demonstrated by our members during this time. We remain hopeful that with the commitment shown by all parties, our demands will be met and our collective efforts will yield success,” the statement concluded.
