Jigawa Assembly warns against illegal cutting down of trees

The Jigawa State House of Assembly has cautioned against illegal tree felling, stressing the need to protect the environment across the state

Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin gave the warning at the official launching of 100,000 tree planting campaign tagged “Restore the Land, Unluck the opportunities” organised by partnership for Development action, PADAC, held in Dutse.

He said cutting of trees has a direct negative impact on the environment and affects the economy.

The Speaker explained that due to the importance attached to environmental protection, the state’s House of Assembly has sponsored a environmental bill that will ensure environmental restoration and protection.

He said the law has passed first and second reading and is now before the house committee on environment and will soon be passed into law”.

“The law covers protection of illigal cutting of trees, bush burning, wild life and compulsory monthly sanitation facilities across the state ”

State Commissioner of Environment, Yahaya Muhammad said, so far over 1,625 hectares of degraded land had been restored in the last two year.

Executive Director PODAC, Aisha Aminu Muhammad commended Jigawa State Government for its commitment towards conbating the effects of climate change.

She said the exercise targeted three streets in Dutse metropolitan for the tree planting campaign exercise and advised residents to imbibe the culture of planting the trees to ensure restoration of environmental.
