The Federal Government has expressed sadness over the boat accident in the Borgu area of Niger State, which claimed the lives of about 32 people.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Friday, described the incident as a painful tragedy coming only months after devastating floods hit Mokwa in the same state.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Government, and the people of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy,” the minister said.
Idris explained that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), would work with the Niger State Government to ensure that survivors and families of the deceased receive necessary support.
He commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency for its swift action in rescuing and accounting for passengers of the ill-fated boat.
The minister also used the occasion to caution Nigerians on the need to prioritize safety when travelling on waterways.
“In particular, no one should embark on boat journeys without wearing appropriate protective jackets. Safety precautions can make the difference between life and death,” he stressed.
To prevent similar tragedies, Idris said the Federal Government had directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide sensitization campaign on waterway safety.
“We pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wish the survivors a speedy recovery,” he added.
