Israel vs Iran: WHO Fears Long-Term Health Risks From Nuclear Sites Attack
The World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has expressed concern over the escalation of violence between Israel and Iran, stressing that it is costing the lives of civilians, including children.
The Israeli Air Force on Sunday night carried out another round of airstrikes across Iran, including the capital and western regions.
The WHO Director-General, via his official X handle on Tuesday, warned that the nuclear sites may have immediate and long-term impact on the environment and health of the people in Iran and most across the region.
According to Tasnim News Agency, associated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Israel “brutally attacked” a fire department facility in Musiyan. Also, Fars News Agency, IRGC-linked, stated that a hospital was hit in the assault.
Ghebreyesus’s message partly read, “The escalation of violence between Israel and Iran is extremely concerning, and is costing the lives of civilians, including children. The growing number of injured civilians is also distressing.
“WHO’s particular concern is the targeting of nuclear sites which may have immediate and long-term impact on the environment and health of people in Iran and most across the region.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s health ministry reports that at least 224 people were killed in Israeli strikes since Friday.
The global health leader, however, called on all parties to work towards peace in settling the chaos amongst them, emphasising that the most courageous choose peace.
“We call on all parties to work towards peace. The most courageous choose peace,” he said.
