IPOB: Kanu Commends CJN For Removing Justice Binta Nyako From Case
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has commended the Chief Justice of Nigeria for reassigning his alleged terrorism charges to another judge.
Kanu had demanded the recusal of the erstwhile presiding judge of his case, Justice Binta Nyako, of the Federal High Court, Abuja, alleging bias and deliberately ignoring superior courts’ verdicts on his case.
Kanu’s commendation is contained in a press release signed by his Special Counsel, Barr Aloy Ejimakor, which was made available to THE WHISTLER in Awka on Saturday.
Barr Ejimakor, in the release, also expressed his appreciation to members of the general public “who publicly expressed their support to our righteous demands that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case be reassigned to another judge as the law demands”.
According to him, “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has always been ready to take his trial because he is firmly convinced of his innocence. But the perverse events of the past six months (from September 2024, when the recusal happened) posed portends dangers to his constitutional rights, particularly his right to fair and speedy hearing.
“It was in view of this that we were propelled to resort to taking extraordinary measures to ensure that his case is properly reassigned and conducted in accordance with the law.”
Ejimakor said the reassigning of the case was the first step by the authorities to do the lawful thing, adding that “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team shall take stock and hanker down to the zealous preparation of his defence.”
Kanu is being detained at the headquarters of the State Security Services in Abuja since 2021.
He is accused of terrorism. He was renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria in a manner rights groups and courts say violated international laws.
