Inzaghi Should Stay As Coach Despite Champions League Defeat – Inter President
Inter Milan President Giuseppe Marotta has expressed the club’s desire to keep Simone Inzaghi despite the embarrassing 5-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League final.
The Italian club set an unwanted record by becoming the first team to concede five goals in the final in the competition’s history.
Inzaghi has one year left on his Inter Milan contract, and he has been linked with a move to Al-Hilal.
Marotta said the Champions League defeat does not affect Inzaghi’s future, expressing his happiness to have him continue his stay at the club.
He said: “This defeat will not have an impact. Almost all the credit for this positive cycle is due to his professionalism and abilities. If he wants to continue, we are happy.
Marotta played down Inzaghi’s comment after the game when he said he is unsure of his future with the club.
He said: “He made some remarks. We’ll meet with him and hear what he has to say. we’re very proud to continue on with him. His response means nothing.We’ll listen to him, there’s no cause for alarm.
“Not only does he have a contract which we’ve decided to meet with him this week about, he also deserves credit for this team’s positive cycle.”
Inzaghi refused to commit his immediate future to the club after the heavy defeat to PSG in the Champions League final.
He said: “We’ve given our all in 58 matches.We’ve gotten here from July 13th. So talking about the future now doesn’t seem right to me.
“We’re starting again from a strong club that’s already made two signings for next season. They know they’ll have to make more. But they’ve always been with us.”
“They’ve always been behind us for better or worse. They told me how proud they are of these 59 matches.
“We had a lot of fans come here hoping to crown the journey we’ve had, but as with two years ago we didn’t make it in the most important match.”
The Italian coach has backed the team to go again next after missing out of the Italian Serie A and the Champions League while providing updates on the Club World Cup.
Inzaghi said: “We’ll think about it calmly and start again with conviction.
“We’ve been through this before. Because finals leave their mark on you, and we’ll have to start again stronger.”
Meanwhile, Inzaghi was asked whether he expects to still be Inter coach at the Club World Cup next month.
He concluded: “I don’t know how to answer that last question now.
“I came out here to speak out of politeness and respect. Because this is a loss that makes me sad.
“You come out of defeats stronger. It seems like a cliche, but we’ve been through it before and then we won the league.
“There’s bitterness. But we have to keep our heads up, knowing that we were up against a team that deserved to win.”
Inzaghi was appointed in 2021, and he has led the club to one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies, and two Champions League final defeats.
Inter Milan will turn their attention to the FIFA World Club Cup, they will battle it out with the likes of Monterrey, Urawa Reds, and River Plate.
