Internal Crises Have Weakened Labour Party-TUC Chairman
The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Enugu State chapter, Comrade Ben Asogwa, Thursday, called on elected office-holders on the platform of the Labour Party as well as other stakeholders of the party to rescue the party before it would go into oblivion.
Asogwa, who spoke in Enugu while reacting to many challenges rocking LP, said it was a pity that LP had lost the strength it garnered during the 2023 general elections.
According to him, “Internal crises have weakened LP. If this situation continues, LP will not go far. Those elected on its platform don’t plan ahead anymore. The masses are already losing confidence in LP.”
He acknowledged that the image of former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, propelled LP to its might in 2023, warning that if Mr Obi leaves LP, the party would be “worse than a shadow of itself in 2027.”
He advised the embattled former chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure, not to place his interest ahead of LP. He also appealed to the judiciary to deliver clear-cut judgments to avoid ambiguities.
According to him, “Some judgements are full of ambiguities, thereby creating rooms for interpretations according to one’s selfish perspectives. Judgements should be categorical to reduce post-judgement squabbles.”
He said LP might still bounce back if the right people were elected on its platform. He attributed LP’s current downswing to external manipulation, as well as the failure of those elected on its platform to live up to expectations, adding that “if Peter Obi leaves Labour Party, it would be hard to sustain its 2023 tempo”.
