Insecurity: Extend Peace Accord To States Ravaged By Banditry, Birnin-Gwari Emirate To FG

The natives of Birnin-Gwari in Kaduna State under the aegis of Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union, BEPU, have called on the Federal Government to extend the peace accord achieved in the area to all states affected by banditry.

THE WHISTLER reports that the Kaduna State government, in collaboration with federal agencies, established “The Peace Dialogue Group” to engage stakeholders and facilitate the peace process.

With this, several senior bandit leaders who had terrorized the Birnin-Gwari and environs laid down their arms and embraced peace, along with their followers.

The repentant bandits assured Kaduna Governor, Uba Sani and National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu of their commitment to the peace pact.

Against this background, the Birnin-Gwari Progressive Union urged the Federal Government to replicate the peace accord to states ravaged by banditry.

Chairman of BEPU, Dr. Isah Galadima made the call in a statement issued to newsmen in Kaduna on Wednesday.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to extend this peace initiative to regions such as Niger, Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto States, which continue to face severe security challenges.

“This will consolidate the gains made in Kaduna State and foster broader national reconciliation, ensuring long-term peace across Nigeria,” he said..

BEPU also called on the Federal and Kaduna State Governments to expedite developmental and infrastructural restoration in the area.

“The people of Birnin Gwari have suffered greatly due to the insecurity, and it is time for the government to intervene and provide the necessary support for rebuilding and rehabilitation,” he said.

The union specifically appealed for the rehabilitation of critical highways, restoration of communication networks, and resumption of financial services.

This is just as the union urged the State Government to play an active role in the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), providing housing, basic amenities, and support services.

“The rehabilitation of our highways is crucial for facilitating trade, enhancing mobility, and supporting the region’s economic recovery.

“We believe that the resettlement of IDPs is a critical step towards restoring normalcy in our community, and we urge the State Government to take immediate action,” Galadima said.

The recent peace process in Birnin Gwari has yielded tangible benefits, including the release of kidnapped individuals, the return of displaced farmers, and the resumption of commercial activities.

“We are grateful for the peace that has been achieved, and we urge the people to continue supporting the peace initiative through positive actions and words,” he added.

BEPU commended the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Malam Zubair Jibril Mai Gwari II, and the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Salisu Isah, for their dedication to the peace process.

The union also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to ensuring peace returned to Birnin Gwari, and to Governor Uba Sani for his efforts in fostering peace and stability throughout Kaduna State.
