I Want To Win More Trophies For Nigeria – Chelle

Super Eagles coach, Soccer Eric Chelle has set his sights on winning more trophies for Nigeria after leading the team to the 2025 Unity Cup in London on Saturday.
Chelle won his first trophy as a coach after guiding the Super Eagles team to a 5-4 penalty shootout victory at the Gtech Community Stadium after the regulation time ended 2-2.
The former Mali coach started his Super Eagles reign with a 2-0 win over Rwanda in March before playing out a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe to dent the team’s World Cup chances.
Chelle was delighted to win his first trophy as a coach while expressing his desire to achieve more with the team.
He said: “This is my first trophy as a coach. When I was a football player, I won lots of trophies. I hope with this trophy I can bring Nigeria another trophy.
“We have an important goal in September. So, I saw this as an opportunity to give many players a chance to show what they can do. And I’m really happy and proud of them because, in just two or three training sessions, they worked really hard. That’s the reality.”
Chelle has urged the team to improve ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in September.
He said: “During this tournament, we scored goals, we created chances, and we showed some very good things in our game. But of course, we still need to work. We have weaknesses. In today’s game, for instance, we made 22 mistakes — that’s a lot.
“We need to improve, to step up as a group and as a team, especially if we want to qualify for the World Cup.”
Chelle will lead the team out against Russia on Friday to continue their preparations for the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda, and South Africa.
The Super Eagles will take on Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on September 1 before taking on South Africa at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein seven days later.
Nigeria currently occupies the fourth position with one win from six matches to earn seven points, sitting six points behind table-toppers South Africa.
